Superintendent Notes

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am sure you are aware of recent news coverage regarding Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The Bangor Area School District is working with the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) to closely monitor this disease. Currently there are no reported cases of COVID-19 in the District or surrounding area. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), risk to the United States is low at this time.

During the winter season, many viruses cause illness, such as the common cold, influenza (flu), and the stomach virus. The DOH recommends using the same precautions for these illnesses to protect against COVID-19. The preventive measures include:

  • Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow or use a tissue and immediately place it in the trash. Do not use your hands.
  • Disinfect surfaces often, such as countertops, light switches, cell phones and other frequently touched areas.
  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
  • Students should stay home if they are sick with a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea until at least

24 hours after they are no longer symptomatic or no longer have a fever without the use of fever-reducing medicine. A fever is considered any temperature greater than 100° Fahrenheit.

The District is following the DOH recommendations for COVID-19 by frequently cleaning surfaces with disinfectant including classroom desks, doorknobs, and light switches. Transportation (STA) is continuing their routine of disinfecting bus/van seats and other common surfaces. BASD principals, nurses, teachers, support staff, and athletic coaches are reviewing preventative measures with our students. At this time, the District is not expecting any school closures, but we are investigating options to academically support students in the event that schools must close for an extended period.

Attached to this letter is a DOH Coronavirus Fact Sheet and the DOH Coronavirus Information for K-12 Schools. Additional information may be found at: and

The Bangor Area School District will remain vigilant in following the recommendations from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. I will keep you informed of any additional public health updates to help protect our school community.
